LGBTQ youth from San Diego Pride’s youth-led programs decided to organize an LGBTQ youth contingent for San Diego’s March For Our Lives which is happening on March 24th, 2018. This LGBTQ youth-led contingent will show its support for the victims of the February 14th shooting in Parkland, Florida, and will call for greater school safety and an end to gun violence.
Youth will gather at San Diego Pride on Friday, March 23rd, from 3-5pm to make signs and posters for the march. Meetup location for Saturday's march is TBD, and will be posted here on this event.
“Students and LGBTQ students alike are affected by gun violence in school, and it’s important that we show people that we are here, and we are standing together to try and stop the violence that students everywhere are facing in an environment that should be safe.” — Marianne Byrd, 16, San Diego High School Sophomore
“Gun Violence is affecting EVERYONE. Just recently we had the largest massacre in US history — at the Orlando shooting in a gay club. Lives are lost and families are continuously torn apart. LGBTQ Youth are here to stand for greater school safety and in memory of the students whose lives ended while just trying to get an education. We as LGBTQ+ know how it feels to be afraid to go to school, and we wouldn’t want ANYONE to be afraid to go to school either. “
-Jeremy, 17, Senior from Hoover High School
“Violence never seems to find its end, and no one seems to be able to find the end of violence. Gun violence has been becoming more and more known, and this has had a larger price than anyone can imagine. As a community, our differences shouldn’t matter and we need to accept each other regardless of what those differences may be. It’s important that all students, LGBTQ+ or not, have a voice in this and know that we all know how it feels to be afraid, but we are in this together, hand in hand, heart in heart, we are valid; and we have a voice.” ~ Bubba Kerr, 14, La Mesa Arts Academy
